As you explore our botanical haven, discover the stories etched into every corner. In 2014, Dr. Ray Webber created the 501(c)(3) non-profit Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens, Inc. He generously donated the entire 20-acre botanical garden to the non-profit, opening it to the public. Furthering his commitment, he dedicated the surrounding 64-acre woodlands to Conservation Florida, ensuring their protection for future generations.
Land Reclamation: Cedar Lakes Woods & Gardens has a 30-year journey of reclamation, converting an abandoned limestone quarry into the captivating water environment before you. After clearing debris and initiating plantings, nature reclaimed its lost space. The result: a haven hosting diverse wildlife, from bird and pollinator species to amphibians, turtles, fish, mammals, and occasional roving deer. The Gardens serve as a living testament to the potential of reclaiming mining sites into thriving environmental resources.
Florida Aquifer: Observe the Florida Aquifer, a prominent feature in our Gardens. Water flows through the limestone, rising and falling based on rainfall miles away. This intricate system sustains life within the Gardens, showcasing the delicate balance of our natural water cycle.
Water Recycling: Witness the ballet of water recycling in action. Each water feature draws water from the Aquifer, returning it to the lakes. Manually watered plants contribute to this cycle, powered by concealed water pumps driving waterfalls and fountains.
Koi Care: While not native to Florida, koi fish grace our pools, symbolizing luck, prosperity, and perseverance. Their vibrant colors add a touch of movement to our serene waters, creating a harmonious blend of nature and culture.
Bat Houses: Located throughout the Gardens are 4 bat houses. Each of these are home to over 500 bats. Bat houses are a terrific way to reduce the population of mosquitoes. Additionally, due to habitat loss and degradation, it is harder for bats to locate natural roost sites to raise their young.
Southern Live Oaks - A Legacy of Centuries: Behold the majestic Southern Live Oaks, some over 500 years old. Native to the southeastern coast, these oaks, with deep-rooted systems, draw up to 50 gallons of water daily. They stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history and natural resilience. We have several over 300 years old and one that is 700 years old.
Migratory and Resident Wildlife Diversity: The Garden is designated by the National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. The plaque on the grounds states that “This property is recognized for its commitment to sustainably provide essential elements of wildlife, habitat: food, water, cover and places to raise young.” So far, over 40 species of birds have been identified as well as amphibians and reptiles, and mammals, such as foxes and bobcats.
